Everyone had high expectations for the game between Team Canada and Team USA in the 4 Nations Face-Off. But no one could have ever imagined what the first nine seconds would look like. After three fights before the game clock even hit double digits, Evander Kane shared a take on fighting that everyone needs to hear.
Before the game, Brady Tkachuk told the media that facing Canada would be the biggest game of his career. Three seconds in, he dropped the gloves to fight Florida Panthers’ Sam Bennett.
And that wasn’t even the first fight of the game. Just as the puck dropped, Brady’s brother Matthew squared off against Brandon Hagel in a spirited tilt. A few seconds after Brady’s fight, it was J.T. Miller’s turn, as he dropped the gloves with Colton Parayko.
Evander Kane’s take on fighting
Some described it as complete mayhem, but fans in attendance and watching at home were thrilled by one of the most dramatic and intense starts to a game in hockey history. At the same time, some thought it was too violent—but Evander Kane disagreed. The injured Oilers forward took to social media to share his thoughts on the game’s wild opening, sending a direct message to those who believe fighting has no place in today’s hockey.
“I must say,” Kane said. “That first 10 minutes is how you sell the game. And some of you want to get rid of fighting. Great start.”
